Botox: First Time Tips

When it comes to softening (or even preventing) facial wrinkles, Botox injections are a safe and effective way to go about it.

Botox is actually a brand for a neurotoxin called Botulinum Toxin – Type A. Botox injections work by relaxing the facial muscles to smooth the dynamic facial wrinkles or lines that appear when someone smiles, frowns, squints, or raises their eyebrows.

In the hands of a qualified injector, Botox injections are a safe and effective way to shed years from the face – while maintaining both a natural look and the ability to make a variety of facial expressions.

These days, millions of people get Botox every year and enjoy great results. If you’re about to try Botox for the first time, here are just a few tips to ensure a pleasant and hassle-free experience:

Tips for Botox First-Timers

  1. botox procedureBe honest and transparent at the consultation.
Share your concerns, be open about hopes and expectations, and provide an accurate health history. Don’t forget to bring up any medications or supplements you might be on and any health conditions or skin issues you’ve had prior.
This way, your injector gets the full picture and will be better equipped to customize your treatment plan to get you the best possible results.
  2. Start prepping days before you show up to your first appointment.
Once you decide to go ahead with your first Botox injection, avoid chemical peels, excessive sun exposure, and rigorous facials approximately five days leading up to your appointment.
It’s also best to steer clear of alcohol and cigarettes a week before your appointment. Doing so will minimize bruising and help improve your recovery.
  3. Botox injections have no down time – but it’s best to avoid doing a few things for the first 4 hours after.
Yes, you can go back to your daily routine right after getting Botox, but do steer clear of the following activities for at least four hours:
    • Lying down
    • Bending forward (e.g., picking up your pet, gardening, cleaning the house, etc.)
    • Exposure to heat, steam, or excessive sunlight
    • Working out
    • Touching, pushing, or picking at the injection sites
Your injector should provide you with the appropriate aftercare instructions, so be sure to follow them to the letter.
  4. Don’t expect results right away.
While the treatment itself only takes minutes, you won’t see immediate results. Within the first few days, you might even wonder if you actually got anything done.
But around the 5th or 7th day, you’ll notice an improvement, although the full results usually appear two weeks after the procedure.
This is also why you shouldn’t miss the follow-up appointment because you and your injector will assess if the initial dose was enough or if you’d like to add more.

Lastly, remember that the injector you choose can make all the difference in achieving the results you want.
